Ann Christin Kornelsen

Ann Christin Kornelsen is the founder and scientific centrepiece of Mission to Marsh. The aim is to raise awareness of the critical condition of wetlands and to promote conservation and sustainable management. With her passion for the protection of marshes, she is particularly active in professional circles in favour of the conservation of wetlands. She has published several scientific papers on the subject of peatlands and is also a volunteer treasurer of the German National Committee of the German Society for Mire and Peat Science (DGMT e.V.) and represents Germany in the International Peatland Society. She has had a passion for wetlands for years. Where other people see stinking swamps with swarms of mosquitoes, she sees impressive nature that has developed over thousands of years and provides a home for unique flora and fauna. She first came into contact with wetlands while studying geography, where she was particularly interested in the protection of moors and peatlands. In 2019, she was responsible for the development, implementation and scientific monitoring of various water management systems on agricultural peatlands at the Lower Saxony State Office for Mining, Energy and Geology (LBEG) as part of the SWAMPS project. During her last position as scientific director of the European Competence Centre for Mire and Climate (ECCMC) and as project leader of the "ReviMoor" project, she realised that the potential of peatland restoration with regard to climate change should be approached in an entrepreneurial way. She then founded Mission to Marsh GmbH with a clear goal: to protect and restore wetlands around the world. As Scientific Managing Director, she is responsible for the renaturalisation projects, the exchange with scientific experts and the transfer of knowledge.
